Latte Art for Beginners: Simple Tips for Your First Pour

You’ve seen the beautiful hearts and rosettas at your local cafe. While it looks like magic, latte art is a skill that anyone can learn with a bit of patience and practice.

It Starts with the Milk

You can’t pour art with bubbly milk. You need ‘microfoam’—milk that looks like wet white paint. Incorporate air gently at the start, then submerse the steam wand to create a whirlpool.

The Technique: High and Low

Start by pouring from a height to ‘set the base’ under the espresso’s crema. Once the cup is half full, bring the pitcher tip close to the surface to let the white foam glide on top.

The Simple Heart

Keep your pour steady in the center. As a white circle forms, lift the pitcher and strike through the center to create the heart shape. Success!
