Walking down the coffee aisle can be confusing. ‘City Roast’, ‘French Roast’, ‘Full City’… what does it all mean? Let’s break down the common roast levels.
Light Roasts
Light roasts (Cinnamon or New England roast) preserve the unique characteristics of the bean’s origin. They are often tea-like, highly acidic, and floral.
Medium Roasts
The crowd-pleaser. Medium roasts (American or City roast) offer a balance between the bean’s origin flavor and the sweetness developed during roasting. Expect notes of caramel and nut.
Dark Roasts
Dark roasts (French or Italian roast) are oily and bold. The flavor comes mostly from the roasting process itself, resulting in smoky, bitter, and chocolatey notes with very low acidity.
